Eight Measures of Healthy & Unhealthy Control

You’ve probably heard the saying, “Control the Controllables.” This practice can be difficult, but if mastered, can be a source of significant peace. When we spend our time trying to change things that are out of our control, we waste the precious time we have and fill ourselves with angst and misery. It is better simply to accept what is out of our control. Remember, acceptance does not equal agreement. We can accept a situation without liking it. If we can learn to accept conditions in this way, we can be more productive in those parts of our lives we can control. This focus expands our sphere of influence, and we become more positive and content in the process. Listed below are 8 “healthy” controls: things we should focus our efforts on that we can control, and 8 “unhealthy” controls: things that we should simply accept and work around.

Healthy Control

  1. Our Responses
  2. Our Attitudes
  3. Our Diets
  4. Our Physical Activity
  5. Our Spending
  6. Our Work/Study
  7. Our Thoughts and Emotions
  8. Our Spirit

Unhealthy Control

  1. The Pandemic
  2. The Actions of Others
  3. National Politics
  4. The Weather & Natural Disasters
  5. Financial Markets
  6. The Thoughts, Feelings, & Beliefs of Others
  7. Time
  8. Your Privilege (Or Lack Thereof)

May you be healthy, wealthy, and wise.
